The evaluation focused on providing the Bank with an independent view of the relevance of the policies and strategies. It also assessed the performance, effectiveness and sustainability of the results of the Bank’s assistance to microfinance projects. In Ghana, three projects were evaluated: The Gender Responsive Project; Poverty Reduction Support Loan II and Urban Poverty Reduction Project. The study involved the enumeration of 1,221 households and small business respondents from 65 communities/localities selected from GNWP’s four (4) targeted Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) of Cape Coast, KEEA, Ga South and Ga West (i.e. communities along the Pra/Densu river basins). It assessed the demand for microcredit by households and small private businesses for investing in the WASH sector, and estimated total microcredit demand by these respondents. The objective of the study was to evaluate whether the interventions at credit union level increased their efficiency and effectiveness including attainment of financial self-sufficiency, and whether at member level higher income or less poverty has been realized, at least in comparison to those people in the community that never joined a credit union. The survey covered 4 regions in Ghana including Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern, and Brong Ahafo regions. A total of 200 members of the credit unions and 100 non-members were interviewed using structured survey instruments. A comparative analysis was undertaken between the two (2) categories of respondents to draw conclusions on the impact of CCAs assistance on beneficiary credit unions in Ghana. |
